What Is Wellfleet-ST2-MIB?

The Wellfleet-ST2-MIB is a Wellfleet Communications proprietary MIB for managing Stream Protocol, Version 2 (ST-II), an early Internet resource-reservation protocol for real-time flows, as implemented on Wellfleet routers. It exposes objects for configuring and tracking reserved streams and their flow-specific parameters, along with statistics on stream setup, teardown, and forwarded traffic. Its monitoring value lies mainly in software/service state: it lets an operator confirm how many reservation streams are active, whether stream setup requests are succeeding, and whether a stream's flow statistics match the reserved bandwidth, revealing resource-reservation failures for real-time applications. It corresponds to the protocol later documented in RFC 1819 (ST2+) though implemented here as a vendor-specific object set. It was used on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers in early experimental or carrier trials of guaranteed-bandwidth multimedia/real-time streaming over IP-based WANs. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-ST2-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-ST2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet router
  • Bay Networks/Nortel router with ST-II support

Monitoring Examples

A network engineer polls the stream reservation table to count currently active ST-II flows and checks each stream's negotiated flow-spec against its actual forwarded traffic statistics. A stream whose reserved parameters were successfully negotiated but whose forwarded packet counters stay at zero suggests the reservation succeeded at the control-plane level while the data path itself is failing to carry traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active stream reservations
  • flow-spec parameters
  • stream setup/teardown events
  • forwarded stream traffic statistics
