Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks LAN and Bridging

Description: Manages Wellfleet Spanning Tree protocol port states, bridge priority, and topology change statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Wellfleet-SPAN-MIB?

Wellfleet-SPAN-MIB is a legacy vendor MIB from Wellfleet Communications (predecessor to Bay Networks/Nortel routers) covering the classic IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol implementation on Wellfleet bridging routers. It exposes per-bridge and per-port spanning tree state, including bridge priority, port states, and topology-change statistics. Its monitoring purpose is Layer 2 topology/software status: tracking whether ports are in blocking, listening, learning, or forwarding state, counting topology changes, and identifying the current root bridge — all of which reveal network loops or unstable links. It parallels and predates the standard IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 1493) spanning-tree objects, implemented here as a Wellfleet-proprietary equivalent. It was deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers acting as transparent bridges in enterprise LANs of the 1990s where redundant links required loop prevention. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-SPAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-SPAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet/Bay Networks bridging routers

Monitoring Examples

No object names were captured for this module, so specific OIDs cannot be cited; based on the short description, an admin would typically poll per-port spanning-tree state and bridge priority along with topology-change counters to detect a bridging loop or a link flapping between blocking and forwarding states.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port spanning-tree state
  • bridge priority
  • topology change count
  • root bridge identity
