Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks LAN and Bridging
Description: Monitors Wellfleet bridge port states, spanning tree parameters, and forwarding database statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Wellfleet-BRIDGE-MIB?
This is a vendor-specific proprietary MIB from Wellfleet Communications, an early multiprotocol router vendor that merged into Bay Networks (later Nortel), covering the transparent bridging function on its routers. It exposes bridge port operational states, spanning-tree protocol parameters (such as port role and blocking/forwarding state), and forwarding-database statistics. It supports monitoring of both hardware and software status: bridge port state reflects physical link health, while spanning-tree state and forwarding-table size reflect the software-level bridging logic and can reveal topology loops, root-bridge changes, or table exhaustion. It closely parallels the standard IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 1493) conceptually, though implemented as a Wellfleet-proprietary equivalent. It is typically deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks multiprotocol routers configured to bridge legacy LAN segments alongside routed traffic. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-BRIDGE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-BRIDGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Wellfleet/Bay Networks multiprotocol routers with bridging modules
Monitoring Examples
No sample_objects were provided for this module, so specific identifiers cannot be cited; based on the short_desc, an operator would typically poll a bridge port table for per-port state (forwarding/blocking/listening) and a spanning-tree table for root bridge identity and topology-change counts. A port stuck in the blocking state longer than expected, or a rising forwarding-database entry count near the table's capacity, would indicate a spanning-tree convergence problem or an impending MAC address table overflow respectively.
What Can Be Monitored
- bridge port operational state
- spanning tree port role/state
- root bridge identity
- forwarding database entry count
- topology change counter
