Category: World Wide Packets Metro Ethernet

Description: Manages World Wide Packets broadcast storm containment thresholds and rate-limiting policy configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-CONTAINMENT-MIB?

WWP-CONTAINMENT-MIB is a World Wide Packets (Ciena LEOS) proprietary MIB that controls broadcast storm containment on the device, using a Link Shaping mechanism applied on a per-port basis. It exposes configuration data for containment thresholds and rate-limiting policies rather than general interface statistics. Its monitoring relevance is in surfacing per-port containment state and threshold settings so an operator can tell whether storm control has been triggered on a port, which is a direct signal of abnormal traffic conditions (e.g., a broadcast storm or misbehaving device) affecting network health. It builds on the device's underlying per-port interface MIB for port indexing and works alongside standard Ethernet interface counters. It is deployed in Metro Ethernet access/aggregation networks built on World Wide Packets/Ciena LEOS switches where broadcast storm protection is required to protect uplinks. Engineers can download the WWP-CONTAINMENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-CONTAINMENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • World Wide Packets / Ciena LEOS Metro Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample object names were supplied; based on the description the relevant data is a per-port containment threshold/rate-limit configuration table. An admin would poll each port's containment threshold and triggered status to see whether a port has exceeded its broadcast rate limit, which would reveal a loop or storm condition on that segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port broadcast containment threshold
  • rate-limiting policy configuration
  • containment triggered status

RFC description

Manages broadcast containment and network containment features on Ciena (World Wide Packets) networking equipment. Provides control and monitoring of traffic containment, isolation, and containment policy enforcement.
