Category: VMware Virtualization
Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications for VMware infrastructure fault and state change events.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB?
VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB is a VMware vendor MIB defining SNMP trap notifications for fault and state-change events across VMware virtual infrastructure, generated by the vCenter/VPXD management daemon. It exposes trap payload objects identifying the affected virtual machine, its configuration file, the type of event, the ESX host name, VM name, and old/new status values. Its monitoring focus is virtual-machine software/state status — detecting VM power-state transitions or fault conditions (e.g., a VM's health going from normal to degraded) as reported by vpxdOldStatus/vpxdNewStatus. It is tied to VMware vCenter/VPXD and the broader vSphere management architecture rather than an independent IETF standard. It is typically deployed within VMware vCenter Server environments managing ESX/ESXi host clusters. Engineers can download the VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware vCenter-managed ESX/ESXi virtual machines
Monitoring Examples
An NMS receiving a trap reads vpxdTrapType together with vmID, vmConfigFile, and vpxdVMName to identify which virtual machine changed state, and compares vpxdOldStatus to vpxdNewStatus to see the transition (e.g., from normal to alert). If vpxdNewStatus indicates a degraded state while vpxdHostName shows a specific ESX host, that flags either a VM-level fault or an issue with the underlying host.
What Can Be Monitored
- VM status change (old vs new)
- VM identity and configuration file
- affected ESX host name
- trap/event type
