Category: Device Management

Description: Defines variables and traps for reporting virtual machine inventory and configuration information on ESXi hosts.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB?

This is a VMware vendor MIB implemented on ESXi hosts to expose virtual machine inventory, configuration, and state information via SNMP, mapping SMI-defined objects to corresponding VMware VIM API properties. It exposes per-VM inventory data such as VM identifiers and configuration file paths, along with state-change notifications for VMs on the host. It is used for monitoring the software-level status of virtualized workloads — tracking which VMs exist on a host, their configuration location, and receiving traps when a VM's power/state changes (e.g., powered on, powered off, suspended) — which is essential for detecting unexpected VM shutdowns or migrations. It is closely tied to VMware's own VIM (Virtual Infrastructure Management) API as its underlying data source, and conceptually complements the host-level HOST-RESOURCES-MIB for physical resource monitoring. It is typically deployed in VMware ESXi virtualization environments where administrators want lightweight SNMP-based VM inventory and state-change alerting without querying the full vSphere API. Engineers can download the VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VMware ESXi host

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll vmwVmID to enumerate all VMs currently registered on an ESXi host and read vmwVmConfigFilePath to locate each VM's configuration file on datastore storage; combined with the MIB's state-change notifications, an unexpected disappearance of a previously-seen vmwVmID from the table, or a notification trap, would indicate a VM was powered off, migrated away, or removed from inventory.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VM identifier/inventory list
  • VM configuration file path
  • VM power/state change events

RFC description

VMware MIB defining virtual machine information objects for vSphere environments. Provides SNMP access to VM names, guest OS, memory size, power state, CPU count, and configuration details for inventory and monitoring.

Start monitoring VMware ESXi host (per-VM inventory/power-state-change status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
