Category: Viptela SD-WAN

Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications for Viptela SD-WAN edge and controller fault events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VIPTELA-TRAPS?

VIPTELA-TRAPS defines the SNMP trap/notification objects for Viptela (now Cisco SD-WAN) edge and controller fault events. It exposes event data such as timestamps, severity levels, BFD path-monitoring session details, and device reboot-action reasons, rather than polled tables. Its monitoring value is fault- and event-oriented: it lets an operator detect a BFD session failure between two SD-WAN transport tunnels (a sign of a failed WAN path) and correlate device reboots with their underlying cause in near real time. It is closely tied to VIPTELA-OPER-SYSTEM, whose operational data (e.g., reboot reason, disk status) is referenced by traps defined here. It is deployed across Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN fabrics where an NMS subscribes to these traps for real-time fault alerting on edge and controller nodes. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the VIPTELA-TRAPS file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VIPTELA-TRAPS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN vEdge router
  • Cisco SD-WAN controller

Monitoring Examples

The viptelaBfd* varbinds (viptelaBfdSrcIp, viptelaBfdDstIp, viptelaBfdLocalColor, viptelaBfdRemoteColor, etc.) are attached to BFD-related traps that fire when a BFD session between two SD-WAN transport tunnels (colors) goes down, letting an admin pinpoint which WAN path failed. The viptelaActionsRebootReason varbind is included in reboot notification traps so a NOC can immediately see why a device restarted without separately polling systemStatusRebootReason. This is purely a notification/trap definition module; it defines no polled runtime tables itself, only the trap PDUs and their varbinds (eventTime, netconfNotificationSeverity, fields, traps).

What Can Be Monitored

  • BFD session up/down events per transport color
  • device reboot reason events
  • event/trap severity
  • event timestamp
