What Is VIPTELA-HARDWARE?
VIPTELA-HARDWARE is a vendor MIB from Viptela (Cisco SD-WAN) that models hardware inventory and environmental operational data for SD-WAN edge devices such as vEdge and vSmart appliances. It exposes a hardware inventory table (type, index, version, part number, serial number, description) and an environmental table classifying hardware components by class, alongside general hardware/CPU/memory/interface status data referenced in the module description. It directly supports monitoring hardware status — component inventory/serial tracking, environmental class conditions (e.g., power supply, fan, temperature sensors), and general CPU/memory/interface health, making it a core tool for detecting failing hardware components or degraded environmental conditions. It complements ENTITY-MIB style inventory concepts though implemented as a Viptela-proprietary structure. It is typically deployed on Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN vEdge routers and vSmart controllers in enterprise WAN deployments. Engineers can download the VIPTELA-HARDWARE file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VIPTELA-HARDWARE. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
What Can Be Monitored
- hardware component inventory
- component serial/part numbers
- environmental component class status
- CPU/memory/interface hardware status
Supported Devices
- Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN vEdge routers
- Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN vSmart controllers
Monitoring Examples
An admin polls hardwareInventoryTable/hardwareInventoryEntry to enumerate components via hardwareInventoryHwType, hardwareInventorySerialNumber, and hardwareInventoryPartNumber, then checks hardwareEnvironmentTable/hardwareEnvironmentEntry keyed by hardwareEnvironmentHwClass for environmental component status. If a hardwareEnvironmentHwClass entry for a power supply or fan reports an abnormal state, that signals a failing environmental component on the vEdge/vSmart chassis needing physical replacement.
