Description: Monitors Viptela OMP overlay management protocol peer sessions, route advertisements, and policy.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VIPTELA-OMP?

VIPTELA-OMP is a Cisco Viptela SD-WAN MIB that monitors the Overlay Management Protocol (OMP), the control-plane protocol vEdge routers use to exchange routes, TLOCs (transport locations), and service reachability with the vSmart controller. Its ompSummary table reports the operational and administrative state of the OMP session, its uptime/downtime, and counts of routes, TLOCs, and services received, installed, and sent. This is fundamentally software/control-plane status monitoring: ompSummaryOperstate and ompSummaryOmpuptime reveal whether the SD-WAN overlay session to the controller is healthy, while route/TLOC counters reveal whether the router is properly learning and advertising the overlay topology. It belongs to Viptela's proprietary SD-WAN MIB suite alongside VIPTELA-BRIDGE and VIPTELA-SECURITY, with no dependency on standard routing MIBs. It's deployed on Cisco SD-WAN (Viptela) vEdge/cEdge routers at any site participating in the SD-WAN fabric. Engineers can download the VIPTELA-OMP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VIPTELA-OMP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Viptela SD-WAN vEdge/cEdge router

Monitoring Examples

A dashboard would poll ompSummaryTable/ompSummary for ompSummaryOperstate versus ompSummaryAdminstate to detect an OMP session that's administratively up but operationally down, and check ompSummaryOmpdowntime for a recent flap. Falling ompSummaryRoutesReceived or ompSummaryTlocsReceived counts would indicate the router has lost visibility into overlay routes or transport paths, often due to a vSmart control connection issue. ompSummaryRoutesSent shows what the local site is advertising to the fabric.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OMP session operational/admin state
  • OMP session uptime/downtime
  • routes received/installed/sent
  • TLOCs received/installed/sent
  • services received

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ompSummaryOperstate OID:

Select a Cisco Viptela SD-WAN vEdge/cEdge router (OMP session state/route-TLOC-service counter status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ompSummaryOperstate into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the operational state. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'uP', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
