Description: Monitors Viptela SD-WAN BGP peer state, route counts, and convergence on WAN edge routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VIPTELA-OPER-BGP?

VIPTELA-OPER-BGP is a Viptela (Cisco SD-WAN) operational-data MIB that models BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) routing state on Viptela SD-WAN WAN-edge vEdge routers. It exposes BGP session summary data including router identifiers, local AS numbers, RIB entry and memory counts, peer counts and memory usage, and a per-neighbor BGP peer table, placing it in the routing/performance-and-fault category. It is directly useful for monitoring the software-level operational status of the routing protocol on the device: tracking total peer count and per-neighbor state reveals whether BGP sessions are established or flapping, and RIB entry/memory counts help detect abnormal route-table growth or memory pressure from the routing process. As a BGP operational-data MIB it models concepts standardized by the BGP4 protocol (RFC 4271) and conceptually parallels the IETF BGP4-MIB even though it is Viptela's own model. It is typically deployed on Cisco/Viptela SD-WAN vEdge routers in enterprise WAN deployments to monitor BGP peering used for underlay/overlay route exchange. Engineers can download the VIPTELA-OPER-BGP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VIPTELA-OPER-BGP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Viptela/Cisco SD-WAN vEdge router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bgpBgpSummaryTable/bgpBgpSummaryEntry for bgpBgpSummaryBgpRouterIdentifier, bgpBgpSummaryLocalAs, bgpBgpSummaryTotalPeers, and bgpBgpSummaryRibEntries/bgpBgpSummaryRibMemory to gauge overall BGP health and RIB size, then drill into bgpBgpSummaryNeighborTable for per-peer state. A drop in bgpBgpSummaryTotalPeers or a neighbor entry showing a non-established state would indicate a BGP session flap or failure affecting SD-WAN route exchange, while unusually high bgpBgpSummaryRibMemory could signal a route-table/memory pressure issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP peer count
  • BGP router identifier and local AS
  • RIB entries and RIB memory usage
  • per-neighbor BGP session state
