Description: Extends the VDSL-LINE-MIB with managed objects for configuring and monitoring VDSL lines using Multiple Carrier Modulation (MCM) line coding.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring VDSL-LINE-EXT-MCM-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is VDSL-LINE-EXT-MCM-MIB?

VDSL-LINE-EXT-MCM-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB that extends the base VDSL-LINE-MIB (RFC 3728) with objects specific to Multiple Carrier Modulation (MCM/DMT) line coding on VDSL transceivers. It exposes configuration-category data such as transmit/receive band plan tables (start/stop tone indices per band) and transmit window length profiles, used to define the physical-layer modulation parameters of a VDSL line. Because this is a physical-layer configuration MIB, it supports monitoring hardware line configuration rather than general system health, confirming a VDSL line's band plan and windowing profile are provisioned correctly, which affects reach and throughput. It is explicitly an optional extension that depends on the VDSL-LINE-MIB from RFC 3728 for the base transceiver objects, and must not be used with lines running Single Carrier Modulation. It is deployed on DSLAM/VDSL line cards and VDSL customer-premises modems from any compliant vendor. Engineers can download the VDSL-LINE-EXT-MCM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VDSL-LINE-EXT-MCM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • VDSL DSLAM line card / VDSL modem using MCM (DMT) line coding

Monitoring Examples

An engineer would inspect vdslLineMCMConfProfileTable/vdslLineMCMConfProfileEntry for a given profile and its vdslLineMCMConfProfileTxBandTable rows (vdslLineMCMConfProfileTxBandStart/Stop) to confirm the correct downstream/upstream band plan is applied to a VDSL line. An unexpected vdslLineMCMConfProfileTxWindowLength value could explain reduced achievable bit rate on a marginal loop. vdslLineMCMConfProfileRowStatus is checked when a new MCM profile is provisioned to a line.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VDSL MCM band plan (tx/rx band start/stop)
  • transmit window length profile
  • profile row/provisioning status
