Category: Firewall and Intrusion Prevention

Description: Manages TippingPoint IPS appliance stacking topology, unit roles, and inter-chassis connectivity.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TPT-STACKING-MIB?

TPT-STACKING-MIB is a Trend Micro TippingPoint IPS MIB covering appliance stacking — the topology, roles, and inter-chassis linkage when multiple TippingPoint devices are joined into a single logical stack for higher throughput or redundancy. It exposes state and fault-category data: per-device and per-stack runtime/topology identifiers (RTI values and their previous values) plus an explicit device fault cause object, alongside a matching notifications group carrying the same information as traps. Its use for hardware status monitoring is direct and explicit — stackingDeviceFaultCause and the corresponding tptStackingNotifyDeviceFaultCause exist specifically to report why a stacked unit has failed or degraded, letting an administrator distinguish a healthy stack member from one experiencing a hardware or link fault. It is TippingPoint/Trend Micro proprietary and is used alongside the vendor's port-mapping and other TPT-* device MIBs when appliances are stacked together. It is deployed in high-throughput inspection environments where several TippingPoint appliances are physically stacked and need to be monitored as a cohesive unit, typically starting with a TPT-STACKING-MIB download to load the module into an NMS or MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TPT-STACKING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • TippingPoint IPS appliance (stacked configuration)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll stackingDeviceRTI against stackingPrevDeviceRTI to detect a change in a stacked unit's role or topology state, and check stackingDeviceFaultCause to determine why a particular device in the stack is reporting a fault. The matching traps — tptStackingNotifyDeviceFaultCause, tptStackingNotifyDeviceRTI, and tptStackingNotifyPrevDeviceRTI, each tagged with tptStackingNotifyDeviceID and tptStackingNotifyTimeStamp — would let an NMS alert in real time when a stack member's health or role changes rather than waiting for the next poll cycle.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-device stack role/topology state (RTI)
  • device fault cause
  • stack-wide topology state
  • stacking fault change notifications
