Category: Firewall and Intrusion Prevention

Description: Manages TippingPoint IPS distributed denial-of-service attack detection, mitigation, and threshold settings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TPT-DDOS-MIB?

TPT-DDOS-MIB is a Trend Micro (TippingPoint) proprietary MIB (registered under tpt-tpa-objs as tpt-ddos) that exposes historical DDoS-mitigation statistics from a TippingPoint intrusion prevention system's SYN-proxy filtering subsystem. It defines time-bucketed sampled-data tables — rejectSynHistSecondsTable for the most recent 60 seconds and rejectSynHistMinutesTable for the most recent 60 minutes — each indexed by a rejectSynHistSecondsGlobalID/rejectSynHistMinutesGlobalID identifying the specific DDoS filter group plus a 0-59 rejectSynHistSecondsIndex/rejectSynHistMinutesIndex slot, with a Counter64 rejectSynHistSecondsUnitCount/rejectSynHistMinutesUnitCount recording how many SYNs that filter rejected in that sample and a rejectSynHistSecondsTimestamp/rejectSynHistMinutesTimestamp marking when the sample was taken; rows in these tables cannot be created or deleted since they represent a fixed rolling window. Because the objects are read-only sampled history rather than live cumulative counters, the MIB's monitoring value is in graphing the recent trend of rejected SYN-flood traffic per filter group to spot an active or building DoS attack. It depends on the parent TPT-TPAMIBS-MIB for its enterprise OID root. It is deployed on TippingPoint IPS appliances performing DDoS detection and mitigation, and security teams load the TPT-DDOS-MIB MIB Browser view of these tables to chart rejected-SYN trends per filter group.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TPT-DDOS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • TippingPoint (Trend Micro) IPS appliances with DDoS/SYN-proxy filtering

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls rejectSynHistSecondsTable for a given rejectSynHistSecondsGlobalID and graphs rejectSynHistSecondsUnitCount across the 60 one-second samples; a sharp, sustained climb in rejected SYNs per second for that filter group, versus its usual near-zero baseline, would indicate an active SYN-flood attack the device is actively filtering.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-second rejected-SYN sample history (last 60 seconds)
  • per-minute rejected-SYN sample history (last 60 minutes)
  • DDoS filter group identifier per sample
  • sample timestamp per bucket
