Description: Defines managed objects for aggregating multiple time-based samples of the same MIB object instance, reducing SNMP bandwidth.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring TIME-AGGREGATE-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is TIME-AGGREGATE-MIB?

TIME-AGGREGATE-MIB is an IETF experimental-track MIB (RFC 4498) that defines managed objects for time-based aggregation of repeated samples of any other MIB object instance, reducing the SNMP polling overhead of collecting time-series data. Its control table, tAggrCtlTable, lets a manager define a Time-Based Aggregate MO (TAgMO) by pointing tAggrCtlMOInstance at any target OBJECT IDENTIFIER, specifying a sampling tAggrCtlInterval (in microseconds) and tAggrCtlSamples count, and optionally applying a tAggrCtlCompressionAlgorithm (none or deflate per RFC 1951) before the agent returns the accumulated samples as an Opaque-encoded TimeAggrMOValue or CompressedTimeAggrMOValue, with per-sample error status available via TAggrMOErrorStatus. This makes it useful for efficient monitoring of rapidly-changing counters or gauges — retrieving many time-spaced samples of a single object in one PDU instead of many separate polls — which is valuable for high-resolution performance trending without proportionally increasing SNMP traffic. It depends on RMON-MIB (OwnerString), SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB (SnmpAdminString), and SNMPv2-TC (RowStatus, StorageType) for its supporting types, and implementers can consult the TIME-AGGREGATE-MIB RFC directly for the full encoding rules.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIME-AGGREGATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 4498), not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An operator creates a tAggrCtlTable row pointing tAggrCtlMOInstance at an interface's ifInOctets, with a short tAggrCtlInterval and enough tAggrCtlSamples to cover a polling gap; retrieving the resulting TimeAggrMOValue in one GET and finding gaps flagged by TAggrMOErrorStatus would indicate the sampled counter was temporarily unreachable during part of the aggregation window.

What Can Be Monitored

  • time-aggregated sample control table entries
  • sampling interval and sample count configuration
  • compression algorithm selection
  • aggregated (and optionally compressed) sample value payloads
  • per-sample error status for failed samples
