Category: IP Routing

Description: Manages Tiara Networks WAN router RIP routing protocol configuration and route table.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TIARARIP-MIB?

TIARARIP-MIB is Tiara Networks' enterprise MIB for configuring and monitoring the RIP (Routing Information Protocol) implementation on its WAN routers. It exposes global RIP settings (protocol version, trusted-neighbor enforcement, source-address validation) and a per-interface configuration table covering RIP enable state, authentication string, and auto-summary/default-route announcement behavior. Its monitoring value is centered on dynamic routing protocol configuration and operational status: an operator can confirm RIP is enabled and correctly configured on each interface and that security options like trusted-neighbor/source validation are active, which helps diagnose routing instability or unexpected route advertisements. It complements more general IP routing MIBs (such as TIARA-IP-MIB) by adding RIP-specific protocol detail. It is typically deployed by operators running RIP as an interior routing protocol across a network of Tiara WAN routers, where TIARARIP-MIB SNMP monitoring supports ongoing verification of per-interface RIP configuration and security settings.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIARARIP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Tiara Networks WAN router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check tiaraRipGlobalEnable and tiaraRipGlobalVersion to confirm RIP is running and which version, then review tiaraRipIfConfTable entries for a given tiaraRipIfConfIpAddr to verify tiaraRipIfConfEnable is set and tiaraRipIfConfAuthString matches its neighbor. If routes are missing or unstable, checking tiaraRipGlobalUseTrustedNeighbour and tiaraRipGlobalValidateSrcIpAddr alongside tiaraRipIfConfDefaultAnnounceEnable would reveal whether a security setting or announcement policy is suppressing expected route exchange.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global RIP enable status and version
  • per-interface RIP enable status
  • RIP authentication string configuration
  • auto-summary and default-route announcement settings

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tiaraRipStatRequestPktsSent OID:

Select a Tiara Networks WAN router (RIP protocol config/security status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tiaraRipStatRequestPktsSent into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of request packets sent on this interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
