Category: Environmental Monitoring

Description: Manages STE2 environmental sensor configuration, measurement values, and alert thresholds.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is STE2-MIB?

STE2-MIB is a proprietary MIB for the STE2 environmental sensor device, part of the HWg (Hardware Group) family of environmental monitoring appliances (indicated by the "hwgroup" object in its tree). It is built specifically to monitor physical environmental conditions at a device's location, exposing generic analog/digital input readings (inpTable) alongside a dedicated sensor table (sensTable) for named sensor channels such as temperature or humidity probes. This is squarely a hardware-status monitoring MIB: inpValue and inpAlarmState report the current reading and alarm condition of each input, while sensName and sensIndex let an administrator identify which physical sensor (e.g., a temperature probe in a server room or cabinet) a given reading corresponds to, directly supporting environmental fault detection (over-temperature, water leak, door-open, etc.). The MIB is self-contained under the vendor's own hwgroup/x390/ste2 enterprise tree with no stated dependency on external standard MIBs. It is typically deployed in server rooms, network closets, or remote equipment cabinets where the STE2 unit provides out-of-band environmental monitoring alongside core IT/network equipment via the STE2-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in STE2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HWg STE2 environmental sensor unit

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the inpTable, using inpIndex to select a specific input channel, and check inpValue against inpAlarmState to see whether a temperature or other environmental reading has crossed into an alarm condition. Cross-referencing the sensTable entries via sensName would identify which physical sensor location (e.g., "Rack 3 Top") triggered the alarm, allowing rapid identification of a cooling failure or environmental fault before it damages nearby equipment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • input sensor reading (temperature/humidity/etc.)
  • sensor alarm state
  • sensor name/location identification
  • device MAC address for identification
