Description: Manages External Power Supply Unit (EPSU) status and operational parameters on Redback SmartEdge BRAS chassis.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-EPSU-MIB?

Despite the short description mentioning a power supply unit, "EPSU" here stands for Evolved Packet System User plane — this Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge enterprise MIB reports user-plane (bearer/data) traffic statistics for a mobile EPC gateway rather than chassis power hardware, as its own module description confirms. It exposes downlink and uplink packet/octet counters over the S1-U interface (between eNodeB and gateway) and the S5/S8 GTP interface (between gateway and PDN gateway), including packets dropped by policing, discarded due to bearer issues, or dropped because the UE was idle. Its monitoring focus is software/traffic-plane health of the mobile gateway: downlink and uplink drop/discard counters reveal user-plane packet loss, policing-specific drop counters isolate loss caused by QoS/rate-limiting policy versus other causes, and idle-UE drop counts highlight packets discarded because a subscriber's radio bearer was paged/idle. It depends on the 3GPP EPS architecture's S1-U and S5/S8 GTP-U interface definitions for its counters. It is deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge platforms functioning as EPC user-plane gateways (SGW/PGW) in mobile operator networks. Engineers can download the RBN-EPSU-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-EPSU-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge / Redback EPC gateway (mobile user-plane function, e.g. SGW/PGW-type role)

Monitoring Examples

An operator trends rbnEpsuS1uDlPktsSent/rbnEpsuS1uDlOctetsSent against rbnEpsuS1uDlPktsDropped to compute a downlink drop rate on the S1-U interface, distinguishing congestion-driven policing drops (rbnEpsuS1uDlPolicingPktsDropped) from idle-UE drops (rbnEpsuS1uDlUeIdlePktsDropped). A spike in rbnEpsuS1uUlPktsDiscarded or rbnEpsuS1uUlBearerPktsDiscarded on the uplink side would indicate bearer-level problems affecting subscriber data, while rbnEpsuS5S8GtpDlPktsRcvd is checked to confirm the gateway is still receiving downlink traffic from its PDN gateway peer.

What Can Be Monitored

  • S1-U downlink/uplink packets and octets
  • S1-U packets dropped by policing
  • S1-U packets dropped for idle UE
  • uplink bearer packets discarded
  • S5/S8 GTP downlink packets received

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnEpsuS1uDlPktsSent OID:

Select an Ericsson SmartEdge / Redback EPC gateway, mobile user-plane function (SGW/PGW-type role) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnEpsuS1uDlPktsSent into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of downlink GTP payload packets sent to eNodeBs over the S1-U interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in Packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
