Category: GPS and Network Timing, Sonus Networks VoIP Softswitch

Description: Manages Sonus Networks softswitch system clock and timing source selection for synchronization.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SONUS-SYSTEM-TIMING-MIB?

SONUS-SYSTEM-TIMING-MIB manages system clock and timing-source selection for network synchronization on Sonus Networks softswitches, a function critical to interworking TDM and VoIP traffic correctly. It exposes per-shelf timing configuration covering failover/recovery guard times, free-run alarm state, and reference-switching/revert behavior. Monitoring this MIB reveals the health of the device's clock-synchronization hardware/software, most notably whether the shelf has lost its external reference and dropped into free-run mode, which is a direct timing-hardware fault indicator, alongside notifications when reference switching occurs. It reflects general telecom clock-synchronization concepts (akin to Stratum/SSU reference switching) and shares shelf-indexing conventions with other Sonus MIBs. It is deployed on carrier gateways requiring precise network clock synchronization for TDM trunk interworking. Engineers can download the SONUS-SYSTEM-TIMING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-SYSTEM-TIMING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks softswitch
  • Sonus media gateway shelf

Monitoring Examples

sonusStShelfAdmnTable/sonusStShelfAdmnEntry per sonusStShelfAdmnShelfIndex exposes sonusStShelfAdmnFreeRunAlarm, which an admin would poll to detect that the system has lost its external timing reference and dropped into free-run mode - a hardware/timing fault. sonusStShelfAdmnFailoverGuardTime and sonusStShelfAdmnRecoveryGuardTime configure how quickly the shelf reacts to a timing-source failure, and sonusStShelfAdmnTimingSourceAction plus sonusSystemTimingMIBNotifications show manual/automatic switching actions and deliver traps when reference switching occurs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • timing source selection
  • free-run alarm state
  • failover/recovery guard times
  • reference switching notifications
  • revert switching configuration
