Category: Environmental Monitoring and Power, Server and Host Management

Description: Defines Sun system management notification traps for hardware faults, resource events, and system state changes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SMA-NOTIFICATION-MIB?

SMA-NOTIFICATION-MIB is a Sun Microsystems vendor-specific MIB that defines a single generic notification, statusChange, used by monitoring modules loaded on Sun's System Management Agent (SMA) to report hardware faults, resource events, and general system state changes. Rather than modeling specific hardware objects itself, it exposes a set of varbinds carried in every statusChange trap: hostName and moduleName identifying where the event occurred, statusOID/statusOIDContext identifying which managed object changed, a human-readable status level and description, and a typed dataValue/dataValueType pair carrying the actual changed value in its original SNMP type. This generic-envelope design lets any Sun hardware or software monitoring module raise a uniform, self-describing trap without needing its own dedicated notification MIB, which simplifies building a single trap receiver that can interpret status changes across many Sun subsystems. It depends on SNMPv2-MIB (snmpTraps) for its notification registration point and on IANAifType-MIB, imported but unused directly by the single object set defined here. It is deployed on Sun/Solaris systems running the System Management Agent for hardware and system health monitoring, and administrators can download the SMA-NOTIFICATION-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SMA-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sun Microsystems / Solaris systems running the System Management Agent (SMA)

Monitoring Examples

An operator's trap receiver captures a statusChange notification and inspects the status and description varbinds; a status value of 'ERROR' accompanied by a moduleName identifying a power supply or fan module, with dataValue showing an out-of-range reading, would indicate a hardware fault requiring immediate attention on that Sun system.

What Can Be Monitored

  • statusChange notification occurrences
  • host and module identity of the reporting event
  • status object identifier (OID) that changed
  • status severity level and description text
  • typed data value carried in the notification
