Description: IETF draft MIB for managing SNMPv3 Session-Based Security Model counters, session state, and compression on SNMP-managed network devices
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SBSM-MIB?
SBSM-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF draft-standard MIB for the SNMPv3 Session-Based Security Model, an experimental security/session layer defined for SNMP itself. It exposes objects related to session state, security session counters, and compression settings used by the SBSM security subsystem within an SNMP engine. Its monitoring value is entirely about the health and behavior of the SNMP management plane itself rather than general device hardware -- administrators would use it to confirm SNMPv3 sessions are establishing correctly and track session counters for anomalies (e.g., failed session negotiations), functioning as a protocol/software status MIB for the SNMP agent's security layer. It is intrinsically dependent on the SNMPv3 framework (SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB, USM) since SBSM is an alternative/extension security model within that architecture. It would be deployed on any SNMP-managed device or manager implementing the experimental SBSM security model, primarily in research or specialized secure-management contexts rather than mainstream production networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SBSM-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SBSM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- any device/manager implementing SNMPv3 with the Session-Based Security Model
Monitoring Examples
No object or table names were captured for this MIB (sample_objects is empty), so a specific polling example cannot be given with confidence. Based on the module description, objects would typically include session counters and compression-state variables that an administrator would check to confirm SNMPv3 SBSM sessions are being established and torn down correctly, but this cannot be grounded in verified object names here.
