What Is S5-CHASSIS-MIB?

S5-CHASSIS-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya BayStack MIB covering the S5000 series chassis-based switches, providing chassis-level hardware identity and change-tracking objects. It exposes chassis type, description, location/contact, hardware version, and serial number, along with counters tracking physical, attachment, and configuration changes over time. Its monitoring value is hardware inventory and hardware-change detection: the physical and attachment change counters act as a proxy for module or power supply insertion/removal events, letting an admin infer when chassis hardware has been altered without a dedicated trap. It works together with S5-CHASSIS-TRAP-MIB, which defines the corresponding trap notifications for these same chassis events. It is typically deployed on Nortel/Avaya BayStack or Passport chassis switches in enterprise network closets and data centers. Engineers can download the S5-CHASSIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in S5-CHASSIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Avaya/Nortel BayStack S5000 series chassis switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls s5ChasType, s5ChasSerNum, and s5ChasVer to inventory chassis hardware and its version, watches s5ChasGblPhysChngs and s5ChasGblPhysLstChng to detect when a module or power supply was physically inserted or removed, and monitors s5ChasGblConfChngs to catch unexpected or unauthorized configuration changes on the chassis.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis type and description
  • chassis serial number
  • chassis hardware/firmware version
  • physical component change count
  • configuration change count
  • chassis location/contact info

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using s5ChasGblPhysChngs OID:

Select an Avaya/Nortel BayStack S5000 series chassis switch (chassis identity/hardware-change counters) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type s5ChasGblPhysChngs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of physical changes (i.e., an addition or removal of a component or sub-component) that have been detected in the chassis since cold/warm start of the agent. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
