What Is S5-ROOT-MIB?

S5-ROOT-MIB is the root Structure of Management Information module for Nortel Networks' BayStack/5000-series product line (originally SynOptics/Bay Networks '5000' architecture), defining the enterprise OID registration hierarchy. It contains no manageable objects itself, serving only to declare the top-level OID subtree under which all other Nortel/Bay 5000-series functional MIB modules attach their tables and traps. As a pure SMI/root module it has no hardware or software status objects to monitor on its own (no uptime, temperature, CPU/memory, or fan/power data). It is a required structural dependency for the whole family of Nortel BayStack/5000-series enterprise MIB modules, so an S5-ROOT-MIB download is typically required alongside the rest of the Nortel BayStack MIB set before any dependent module will compile. It would historically have been deployed as a prerequisite MIB wherever Nortel BayStack 5000-series switches/hubs were managed via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in S5-ROOT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel BayStack/5000-series switches and hubs

Monitoring Examples

S5-ROOT-MIB has no sample objects because it is a pure SMI root module; it defines only the enterprise OID arc that dependent Nortel/Bay 5000-series MIBs attach their chassis, port, and environmental objects to. There is no standalone monitoring scenario for this module — it exists purely so OIDs in the functional BayStack MIBs resolve during compilation and polling.
