Organization: IETF Bridge MIB Working Group

Last Updated: 2005-12-07

Category: VLAN and Bridging

Description: Defines managed objects for bridges implementing the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (IEEE 802.1w), providing faster convergence parameters beyond the base BRIDGE-MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring RSTP-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is RSTP-MIB?

RSTP-MIB is the vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB (RFC 4318) that extends the base BRIDGE-MIB to manage IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol on Ethernet bridges/switches, the faster-converging successor to classic STP. It exposes spanning-tree protocol configuration and per-port state such as STP version, transmit hold count, port role/edge-port administrative and operational settings, point-to-point link detection, and path cost, alongside notifications for topology-related events. Its monitoring value is centered on software/protocol status rather than physical sensors: administrators use it to confirm whether a port is correctly negotiated as an edge port or point-to-point link, whether protocol migration has occurred, and whether the bridge is running the expected STP version -- all revealing misconfigurations that could slow convergence or cause loops. It explicitly extends the IETF BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 4188) and implements IEEE 802.1w, so it is meaningless without that base bridge MIB context. It is deployed on any managed Ethernet switch supporting RSTP, typically in enterprise or data center LANs needing rapid failover on redundant links, with the RSTP-MIB RFC (RFC 4318) serving as the definitive reference for its object definitions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RSTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • managed Ethernet switch/bridge supporting IEEE 802.1w RSTP

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll dot1dStpExtPortTable / dot1dStpExtPortEntry rows to check dot1dStpPortAdminEdgePort against dot1dStpPortOperEdgePort -- a mismatch reveals a port expected to be an edge port that is instead negotiating as part of the active spanning tree, delaying convergence. Checking dot1dStpPortOperPointToPoint against dot1dStpPortAdminPointToPoint confirms full-duplex point-to-point links are recognized correctly, and monitoring dot1dStpPortProtocolMigration flags a port falling back to legacy STP compatibility mode. dot1dStpVersion confirms the bridge is actually running RSTP rather than classic STP.

What Can Be Monitored

  • STP protocol version in use
  • per-port edge-port admin/oper status
  • per-port point-to-point link admin/oper status
  • port protocol migration flag
  • port path cost
  • transmit hold count
