Description: HP ICF SNMP MIB for Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (RPVST+) configuration and port state on HP ProCurve switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-ICF-RPVST-MIB?

HP-ICF-RPVST-MIB is part of HP's ICF (Internetworking Core Facility) private enterprise MIB family, covering Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Plus (RPVST+) configuration and per-port state on HP ProCurve switches. It exposes per-port, per-VLAN spanning tree data through a dedicated port table, letting an administrator see how each switch port is participating in spanning tree on a VLAN-by-VLAN basis. Although RPVST+ is a Layer 2 protocol rather than a physical sensor, the data it exposes is used for software-level health monitoring of the switch: detecting ports stuck in blocking state, unexpected topology changes, or loop-prevention failures that would otherwise degrade or take down the network. It extends the concepts of the standard IEEE 802.1D/802.1w spanning tree and Q-BRIDGE-MIB world into HP's own per-VLAN instance model, so it depends conceptually on those standards even though it is implemented as an HP-private extension. It is deployed on HP ProCurve (and later Aruba-branded) enterprise LAN switches in campus networks that use per-VLAN spanning tree for loop prevention. Engineers can download the HP-ICF-RPVST-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ICF-RPVST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve switches
  • HP ICF-based enterprise LAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll hpicfRpvstPortTable (and its implied hpicfRpvstPortEntry rows) to see the RPVST+ state of each switch port on each VLAN, checking for ports that remain in a blocking or discarding state longer than expected. A port unexpectedly transitioning between forwarding and blocking repeatedly would reveal an unstable or flapping spanning-tree topology, often caused by a bad cable, a misconfigured trunk, or an accidental physical loop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-VLAN spanning tree port state (forwarding/blocking/listening)
  • RPVST+ port role per VLAN
  • VLAN-to-spanning-tree-instance mapping
  • port participation in per-VLAN STP

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpicfRpvstVlanRootChangeCounter OID:

Select an HP ProCurve/Aruba switch (Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Plus) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpicfRpvstVlanRootChangeCounter into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of times the root has changed for this VLAN. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
