What Is RFC1407-MIB?

RFC1407-MIB (formally published as part of RFC 3896, superseding the original RFC 1407) is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB that defines managed objects for DS3 and E3 digital transmission interfaces, common in WAN and carrier-grade equipment. It exposes interface configuration data (line type, line coding, send code, circuit identifier, loopback configuration) as well as line status and time-interval-based performance statistics used for fault and performance monitoring. Its central monitoring use is hardware/line status: dsx3LineStatus reports real-time alarm and failure conditions on the physical DS3/E3 circuit, while dsx3TimeElapsed and dsx3ValidIntervals support historical performance-interval tracking, and ds3Traps deliver asynchronous notifications when line conditions change. It is tightly coupled to the standard IF-MIB, since DS3/E3 interfaces are indexed via ifIndex (dsx3IfIndex) and interface-generic counters are expected to be read alongside this MIB, and engineers pulling up the RFC1407-MIB reference documentation should note it now points to RFC 3896 rather than the original, obsoleted RFC 1407 text. It is typically deployed on carrier-class routers, channel banks, and access multiplexers terminating DS3/E3 leased lines or trunks.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll dsx3ConfigTable/dsx3ConfigEntry, keyed by dsx3LineIndex and dsx3IfIndex, to check dsx3LineType, dsx3LineCoding, and dsx3LoopbackConfig for a DS3 circuit, then monitor dsx3LineStatus for bit-mapped alarm conditions such as loss of signal or AIS. Tracking dsx3TimeElapsed against dsx3ValidIntervals lets an operator correlate performance counters to a specific 15-minute interval when analyzing a burst of errors. Receiving a ds3Traps notification alongside a non-zero dsx3LineStatus would indicate the DS3 line has entered an alarm state requiring carrier or hardware investigation.
