What Is RFC1406-MIB?

RFC1406-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB module that defines managed objects for DS1 and T1 digital transmission interfaces found in WAN and telecom transport equipment. It exposes configuration data such as line type, line coding, and line status, along with performance statistics like errored seconds, severely errored seconds, and loss-of-signal counts collected over 15-minute and 24-hour intervals. Administrators use it primarily to monitor the hardware health and signal integrity of T1/DS1 circuits, tracking interface up/down status and cumulative error counts that indicate a failing line card, bad cabling, or clocking problems. It is closely tied to the standard IF-MIB, since DS1 interfaces are typically indexed alongside generic ifTable entries. It is deployed on telecom carrier equipment, channel banks, CSU/DSUs, and routers with T1/DS1 WAN interfaces. Because it is a long-standing IETF standard, most SNMP tools ship the RFC1406-MIB MIB definitions pre-loaded, sparing operators from having to compile it separately before use.

Monitoring Examples
