Description: Monitors SFP optical transceiver presence, type, and diagnostic data on Redback SmartEdge BRAS line cards.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-SFP-MIB?
RBN-SFP-MIB is a Redback Networks (Ericsson) enterprise MIB for SmartEdge series BRAS platforms that manages Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver modules installed in line cards. It exposes hardware alarm and diagnostic data for SFP ports, including active alarm records with severity, type, timestamp, description, and probable cause. This MIB is squarely focused on monitoring physical hardware health of the device: it tracks whether an SFP alarm condition (e.g., loss of signal, high temperature, low optical power) is active on a given card slot and port, flagging service-affecting faults. It is a vendor-specific extension rather than one built directly on a common IETF SFP standard, and it emits its own notifications (rbnSfpMonMIBNotifications) for real-time fault reporting. It is typically deployed on Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS chassis in service-provider access and edge networks where optical interface health directly affects subscriber service delivery. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-SFP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-SFP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Redback SmartEdge BRAS line cards
- Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER) family
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rbnSfpAlarmActiveTable/rbnSfpAlarmActiveEntry, keyed by rbnSfpActiveAlarmIndex, to see current alarms identified by rbnSfpAlarmCardSlot and rbnSfpAlarmPort. Fields like rbnSfpAlarmSeverity, rbnSfpAlarmType, and rbnSfpAlarmProbableCause reveal the nature of a fault, such as a degraded optical link, while rbnSfpAlarmServiceAffecting flags whether it impacts live traffic. rbnSfpAlarmDateAndTime and rbnSfpAlarmDescription give a timestamped human-readable record useful for correlating an outage with a specific SFP failure; a growing count of service-affecting entries on a particular slot/port would point to a failing transceiver needing replacement.
What Can Be Monitored
- active SFP alarm status per card slot/port
- SFP alarm severity and type
- service-affecting fault flags
- SFP alarm timestamp and description
- probable cause of optical transceiver faults
