Category: Environmental Monitoring, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Manages External Power Supply Controller (EPSC) status and alarms on Redback SmartEdge BRAS chassis.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-EPSC-MIB?

Despite the short description mentioning power supplies, "EPSC" here stands for Evolved Packet System Control — this Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge enterprise MIB monitors control-plane activity of a mobile-network Evolved Packet Core (EPC) gateway function rather than chassis power hardware. It exposes counters for PDN connection establishment and timeouts, EPS bearer establishment, attached UE (mobile subscriber) counts, closed CDR (charging data record) files, and Diameter Rf-interface charging-request/answer counts, plus GTP-C session-creation synchronization counters. Its monitoring value is squarely on software/service-level health of the mobile packet-core function: attached-UE and bearer counts show live subscriber/session load, invalid Diameter messages flag malformed charging protocol traffic, and comparing sent versus received Rf accounting messages reveals charging-server communication problems that could lead to lost billing records. It depends on the 3GPP EPS architecture and the Diameter Rf (offline charging) interface standard for several of its counters. It is deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge platforms acting as mobile broadband/EPC gateways in carrier networks. Engineers can download the RBN-EPSC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-EPSC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge / Redback EPC gateway (mobile packet-core control-plane function, e.g. SGW/PGW-type role)

Monitoring Examples

An operator trends rbnEpscUeAttached and rbnEpscBearersEstablished over time to confirm subscriber attach/session volume is within expected bounds, and compares rbnEpscRfAcrSent to rbnEpscRfAcaSuccRcvd/rbnEpscRfAcaFailRcvd to detect a charging-server outage (a growing gap indicates unacknowledged Diameter Rf accounting requests, risking lost billing data). A rise in rbnEpscDiameterMsgInvalidRcvd or rbnEpscIcrCreateSessionSyncRcvd would point to a protocol-compatibility issue with a peer, and rbnEpscClosedCdrFiles confirms CDR files are being finalized and shipped for billing on schedule.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PDN connections established and timeouts
  • EPS bearers established
  • attached UE (subscriber) count
  • closed CDR files
  • Diameter Rf charging requests/answers sent and received
  • invalid Diameter messages received

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnEpscPdnConnectionTimeout OID:

Select an Ericsson SmartEdge / Redback EPC gateway, mobile packet-core control-plane (SGW/PGW-type role) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnEpscPdnConnectionTimeout into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This counter is updated when no valid Modify Bearer Request message is received before the activation timeout has expired. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
