Category: Synchronization

Description: Manages D-Link IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) clock configuration, port state, and grandmaster clock synchronization.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PTP-MIB?

PTP-MIB (module identity swPTPMIB) is a D-Link vendor-private MIB, registered under dlink-common-mgmt.94, that manages IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) clock behavior on D-Link switches. It exposes global settings through swPTPState, swPTPMode (boundary/p2p-transparent/e2e-transparent), swPTPTransportProtocol (udp/ethernet), and boundary-clock attributes swPTPBoundaryPriority1/swPTPBoundaryPriority2 used by the Best Master Clock algorithm; a swPTPClockDomainTable tracks per-unit PTP domain number and name, a swPTPPortTable exposes per-port swPTPPortState, and a swPTPBoundaryPortCFGTable defines per-port timing parameters such as announce interval/timeout, sync interval, and delay-request intervals plus the delay mechanism used. Separate swPTPClock, swPTPClockParent, and swPTPForeignMaster branches track the local clock's own state, its current parent/grandmaster, and any foreign master candidates seen on the network. Because clock synchronization accuracy hinges on stable PTP port states and correctly negotiated master/slave roles, monitoring this MIB is useful for detecting a switch that has lost its grandmaster reference or is stuck in an unexpected boundary-clock role. It is deployed on D-Link switches used as PTP boundary or transparent clocks in synchronization-sensitive networks (e.g. mobile backhaul, TDM-over-packet), and administrators can download the PTP-MIB file to monitor 1588 clock synchronization on these devices.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link switches (e.g. layer-3 managed switch series) supporting IEEE 1588 PTP

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls swPTPPortTable to confirm swPTPPortState is enabled(1) on the uplink port acting as the PTP path to the grandmaster, and checks the swPTPClockParent branch to verify the expected parent clock is still selected; a port unexpectedly reporting disabled(2) or a change in the reported parent clock would indicate a PTP synchronization path failure that could degrade downstream timing accuracy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global PTP enable state
  • PTP device mode (boundary/transparent)
  • boundary clock priority1/priority2
  • per-port PTP state
  • boundary-port announce/sync/delay-request intervals
  • per-domain clock configuration
