Description: Handles Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) setup for BATM Advanced Communication devices, including clock source selection and ESMC state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PRVT-SYNC-ETHERNET-MIB?

PRVT-SYNC-ETHERNET-MIB is a BATM Advanced Communications enterprise MIB for managing Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), the ITU-T G.8261/G.781-based mechanism for distributing frequency synchronization over Ethernet links. It exposes clock-source configuration and status per interface, including admin status, ESMC (Ethernet Synchronization Messaging Channel) state, frequency, quality level, and G.781 option mode, along with hold-off and wait-to-restore timers and a notifications group for quality changes. Its monitoring value is centered on software/protocol-level timing health: it lets an operator confirm which clock source a device is currently using, its received quality level, and whether ESMC signaling is healthy, revealing synchronization degradation or a clock source failover before it disrupts timing-sensitive services. It implements ITU-T G.781/G.8261 synchronization standards and typically works alongside standard interface and alarm MIBs on the same platform. It is deployed on BATM carrier Ethernet/transport switches used in mobile backhaul and other timing-sensitive network segments. Engineers can download the PRVT-SYNC-ETHERNET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PRVT-SYNC-ETHERNET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • BATM Advanced Communications carrier Ethernet/transport switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll syncEthernetClockSourceTable / syncEthernetClockSourceEntry to read syncEthernetClockSourceRecvQualityLevel and syncEthernetClockSourceEsmc for a given clock source, confirming the device is receiving a good-quality timing reference over that port. Checking syncEthernetClockSourceAdminStatus and syncEthernetClockSourceFrequency verifies the source is enabled and running at the expected frequency. A syncEthernetClockSourceQualityChangeNotify trap firing alongside a drop in syncEthernetClockSourceQuality would indicate the active timing source has degraded, prompting the switch to hold off (per syncEthernetHoldOffTime) before failing over to a backup source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active clock source
  • clock source admin status
  • ESMC signaling state
  • received quality level
  • clock frequency
  • hold-off and wait-to-restore timers
