Description: Manages NBMA Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP) shortcut virtual circuits, NHS server reachability, and cache entries.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PNHRP-MIB?

PNHRP-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB implementing management for the NBMA Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP), used in shortcut-routing overlay networks such as Frame Relay or ATM NBMA clouds. It exposes objects for NHRP resolution cache sizing, IP exclusion lists (addresses/masks excluded from NHRP resolution), configured data rate, and a per-port table describing NHRP-enabled interfaces including slot, interface, and best-effort delivery settings. Its monitoring value lies mainly in protocol/configuration state rather than hardware health: it lets an operator confirm NHRP cache capacity and exclusion policy and check which router ports have NHRP shortcut resolution enabled. As an implementation of the IETF NHRP protocol concept, it is conceptually dependent on the underlying NHRP RFC standards even though this is a proprietary MIB rendering of it. It is typically deployed on routers participating in NBMA (e.g., Frame Relay/ATM) networks that use NHRP to establish direct shortcut virtual circuits between endpoints, and administrators consulting the PNHRP-MIB RFC background can better understand the underlying protocol semantics these vendor objects implement.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PNHRP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NBMA-capable router (Frame Relay/ATM WAN router)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check pNHRPResolutionCacheSize to ensure the NHRP cache is large enough for the number of shortcut circuits expected on the network, and walk pNHRPIPExcludeTable/pNHRPIPExcludeEntry to confirm which pNHRPIPExcludeAddress/pNHRPIPExcludeMask ranges are excluded from shortcut resolution. Reviewing pNHRPPortTable/pNHRPPortEntry with pNHRPPortSlot and pNHRPPortIf identifies which physical ports have NHRP enabled and whether pNHRPPortUseBestEffort is set, which affects how aggressively shortcuts are established. An unexpectedly small pNHRPResolutionCacheSize relative to network size could explain failed shortcut resolutions and suboptimal routing through the NBMA hub.

What Can Be Monitored

  • NHRP resolution cache size
  • IP exclusion list entries
  • configured data rate
  • per-port NHRP enablement
  • best-effort delivery setting
