Category: IP Services

Description: Reports TCP/UDP socket state and connection statistics for management-plane services on Paradyne xDSL access devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PDN-SOCKET-MIB?

PDN-SOCKET-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Paradyne, a maker of xDSL and broadband access equipment, used to expose TCP/UDP socket-level statistics for the device's management-plane services. It exposes data such as socket counts and traffic statistics for services running on the device's embedded management stack, along with associated trap notifications. This is primarily useful for monitoring the software status of the device — verifying that management services (e.g., Telnet, SNMP, HTTP daemons) are up and accepting connections, and detecting resource exhaustion such as socket leaks or unusual connection loads that indicate a software fault. It likely relies on standard TCP/UDP socket semantics but is implemented as an enterprise-specific extension rather than adopting the IETF TCP-MIB/UDP-MIB directly. It is typically deployed on Paradyne DSL access multiplexers and modems where operators use SNMP to remotely verify the health of embedded management services. Engineers can download the PDN-SOCKET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PDN-SOCKET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Paradyne xDSL access multiplexer/modem
  • DSL broadband access device

Monitoring Examples

Objects under devSocketStatsMIBObjects would be polled to retrieve counts and state of active management sockets, while devSocketStatsMIBTraps would fire notifications when abnormal socket conditions occur, such as a socket table nearing capacity. An admin might track socket open/close activity over time to catch a slow socket leak that eventually exhausts available management connections and makes the device unreachable via SNMP or Telnet. Only the top-level Objects/Traps nodes are named in the available data, so specific per-socket table columns can't be confirmed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active socket count
  • socket connection state
  • management-plane connection statistics
  • socket-related trap notifications
