Category: MPLS/Traffic Engineering, WAN
Description: Defines textual conventions for IETF Provider Provisioned VPN (PPVPN) MIB modules, covering VPN type and route-distinguisher formats.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is PPVPN-TC?
PPVPN-TC is an IETF standards-based textual-conventions-only MIB module that defines shared data types — such as VPN identifiers and route-distinguisher formats — used by other Provider Provisioned VPN (PPVPN) MIB modules like the PW-MIB and VPN-specific MIBs. It contains no runtime managed objects of its own; instead it establishes common SYNTAX definitions that other MIBs import to ensure consistent representation of VPN-related identifiers across a vendor's or standard's MIB set. Because it defines only conventions rather than instrumented objects, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status — its value is purely as a shared building block. It is explicitly a dependency for numerous PPVPN and pseudo-wire MIB modules (e.g., PW-MIB, PW-MPLS-MIB) that import its textual conventions rather than redefining them. It would be found loaded on any MIB compiler or NMS alongside actual PPVPN/VPN or pseudo-wire MIBs on provider-edge routers offering VPN services, making this PPVPN-TC reference the shared vocabulary those functional VPN MIBs build on.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PPVPN-TC. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (textual conventions only)
- provider-edge routers running PPVPN/VPN services (indirectly, via importing MIBs)
Monitoring Examples
Since sample_objects is empty and this is a textual-conventions module, PPVPN-TC does not itself expose any pollable objects or tables to monitor — it only supplies type definitions (e.g., VPN identifier and route-distinguisher formats) that other MIB modules reference in their own object definitions.
