Category: Telephony and VoIP

Description: Defines managed objects for event management on PacketCable/IPCablecom-compliant Multimedia Terminal Adapters.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring PKTC-IETF-EVENT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is PKTC-IETF-EVENT-MIB?

This IETF/PacketCable standard MIB defines managed objects for the event/logging subsystem of Multimedia Terminal Adapters (MTAs) — the VoIP-over-cable devices used in PacketCable and IPCablecom deployments. It covers configuration of how the device reports operational events, including syslog server address, transport protocol, port, and message format, plus a table of event classes (pktcEventClassTable) letting an operator categorize and control which types of events are reported or suppressed. Its role in monitoring centers on software/event status: it exposes the device's own internal logging and eventing behavior, letting an administrator confirm the MTA is correctly forwarding fault and status events (via syslog and SNMP notifications) rather than measuring hardware sensors directly. As a PacketCable/IETF specification, it is designed to be used together with other PacketCable MIBs (such as device provisioning and signaling MIBs) that generate the actual events this module classifies and forwards. It is deployed in cable-operator networks on residential and business VoIP MTA/eMTA devices. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the PKTC-IETF-EVENT-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PKTC-IETF-EVENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • PacketCable/IPCablecom Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA)
  • cable VoIP eMTA device

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check pktcEventSyslogAddress and pktcEventSyslogPort to confirm an MTA is pointed at the correct centralized syslog collector, and pktcEventSyslogTransport/pktcEventSyslogMessageFormat to ensure the wire format matches what the collector expects. pktcEventClassTable lets an administrator see which event classes are enabled or suppressed (pktcEventClassStatus) for a given pktcEventClassName, useful when troubleshooting why expected fault notifications aren't arriving. Issuing pktcEventReset lets an operator clear the device's event subsystem state during a troubleshooting session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • syslog server configuration
  • event message format/transport
  • event class enable/suppress status
  • event notification generation
  • event subsystem reset state
