What Is BWS-MIB?

BWS-MIB, despite its name suggesting BroadWorks, is grounded by its module description and enterprise object identifiers in Barracuda Networks' Web Application/Website Firewall product line rather than a BroadSoft platform. It exposes both application-layer proxy statistics, per-listener HTTP proxy connection and request counts, and appliance-level health indicators such as system load and CPU fan speed. Its monitoring value spans both software service status and hardware status: active/total connection and request counters track how many client connections each protected web application is handling, while system load and fan speed give direct hardware/OS health signals, and attack/application/server totals summarize the security and application-protection posture of the whole appliance. It is a self-contained Barracuda enterprise MIB using standard SNMPv2 SMI conventions, not dependent on other vendors' MIBs. It is deployed in front of web application server farms where the Barracuda appliance provides reverse-proxy load balancing and web application firewall protection, with NOC/security teams polling it for both traffic and appliance-health visibility. Engineers can download the BWS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BWS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bwsHttpProxyStatsTable/bwsHttpProxyStatsEntry indexed by httpProxyAddress/httpProxyPort to read httpProxyActiveConn and httpProxyTotalReq for a given protected application, then check httpProxyServerErr and httpProxyServerAbrt to see if the backend server is failing or aborting a growing share of requests. A rising httpProxyClientAbrt count could reveal clients timing out due to slow backend responses, while a jump in total attacks alongside stable active applications/servers would indicate the appliance is actively blocking a wave of attacks rather than experiencing a service outage. System load and CPU fan speed would be checked in parallel to rule out the appliance itself becoming a bottleneck under attack load.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using httpProxyActiveConn OID:

Select a Barracuda Web Application/Website Firewall appliance as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type httpProxyActiveConn into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of active connections. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
