Category: DSL and Broadband Access

Description: Extends standard DS3 MIB objects with Paradyne-specific framing, alarm, and performance statistics for DS3 uplink interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PDN-DS3EXT-MIB?

PDN-DS3EXT-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Paradyne Networks that extends the standard DS3-MIB (RFC 2496) with additional Paradyne-specific configuration and performance objects for DS3 uplink interfaces on its access equipment. It exposes DS3 framing configuration (framing type, C-bit handling, timing marker code) alongside a current-interval performance statistics table covering errored blocks, errored seconds, severely errored seconds, and PLCP-layer framing errors. Its monitoring focus is heavily on hardware/circuit performance — devDs3CurrentEB, devDs3CurrentES, and devDs3CurrentSES are classic DS3 line-quality indicators used to detect a degrading or failing high-speed trunk before it causes a service outage. The module explicitly builds on and extends the IETF DS3-MIB (RFC 2496), inheriting its performance statistics model while adding vendor-specific configuration detail. It is deployed on Paradyne DS3 access/aggregation equipment carrying high-capacity trunk circuits that require close performance monitoring, and a PDN-DS3EXT-MIB download lets administrators load the module into their MIB browser for this purpose.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PDN-DS3EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Paradyne DS3 access/aggregation equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls devDs3ConfigTable/devDs3ConfigEntry (by devDs3ConfigIfIndex) to confirm devDs3ConfigFramingType matches the carrier's expected framing, then monitors devDs3CurrentTable/devDs3CurrentEntry for devDs3CurrentES and devDs3CurrentSES each interval. A sudden increase in devDs3CurrentSES indicates the DS3 circuit is experiencing severe errors, likely from a physical layer issue such as a bad connector or degraded fiber/copper run. Checking devDs3CurrentPlcpSEFS alongside these counters helps distinguish framing-layer problems from raw line errors.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DS3 framing configuration
  • errored blocks
  • errored seconds
