Category: Console Servers

Description: Monitors managed host reachability and status detected by Opengear out-of-band management appliances.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is OPENGEAR-HOST-MIB?

OPENGEAR-HOST-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Opengear out-of-band management and console server appliances, used to monitor the connection status of hosts and devices reachable through the Opengear unit's serial, network, or console ports. It exposes an event table recording connection-related occurrences for managed hosts, including the source username, event type, network address, protocol, and port involved. Functionally this is a status/fault MIB rather than a hardware-sensor MIB: it tracks whether managed downstream devices are reachable, when connections are established or lost, and who or what triggered a given event, which is valuable for auditing and detecting outages of equipment behind the Opengear box. It is part of the broader Opengear enterprise MIB family built on OPENGEAR-SMI and is commonly used alongside Opengear's sensor and UPS MIBs for a fuller picture of managed infrastructure. It is typically deployed in data centers and remote sites where Opengear console/network appliances provide out-of-band access and need to alert operators when a managed host becomes unreachable, and administrators can download the OPENGEAR-HOST-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OPENGEAR-HOST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Opengear out-of-band management/console server appliance

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll oghostEventTable/oghostEventEntry and inspect oghostEventType together with oghostEventAddress and oghostEventPort to see which managed device changed connection state and over what protocol. Cross-referencing oghostEventUsername would reveal whether the event was tied to a specific administrative session, while oghostEventDescription provides a human-readable summary of the occurrence. A cluster of new entries showing the same oghostEventAddress going unreachable would indicate a downstream device or link failure that needs attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • managed host connection/disconnection events
  • event type and protocol
  • source address and port
  • username associated with event
  • host reachability status
