Category: Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport

Description: Provides SNMP objects for IP-in-VC encapsulation virtual circuit management on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-IpiVcMIB?

Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-IpiVcMIB provides SNMP objects for IP-in-VC (IP encapsulated over virtual circuit) management on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches, covering the mapping of IP addressing onto ATM or Frame Relay virtual circuits. It defines row status/provisioning tables for each IP-in-VC component, including the assigned IP address and the maximum number of logical channel numbers (LCNs) supported, plus a DNA (Distributed Network Address) row-status sub-table. This allows an operator to monitor whether an IP-in-VC component is provisioned and active, confirm its assigned IP address, and track LCN capacity usage against the configured maximum -- a configuration and capacity-monitoring function for the IP-over-VC encapsulation software on the switch. It depends on both IP addressing conventions and the underlying VC/DNA addressing model used elsewhere in the Passport MIB family, in addition to the shared RowStatus/StorageType conventions. It is used on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches carrying IP traffic encapsulated over ATM/Frame Relay virtual circuits in carrier backbone networks. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-IpiVcMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-IpiVcMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switch (IP-over-VC)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls mscIpivcRowStatusTable and mscIpivcProvTable (via mscIpivcIndex) to confirm an IP-in-VC component is active, then checks mscIpivcIpAddress to verify the correct IP address is bound to that virtual circuit. Comparing configured versus in-use logical channels against mscIpivcMaximumNumberOfLcn shows whether the component is approaching its LCN capacity limit. mscIpivcDnaRowStatusTable reveals whether the associated DNA (network address) sub-component is properly provisioned for that VC.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IP-in-VC component status
  • assigned IP address
  • logical channel number (LCN) usage vs. maximum
  • DNA sub-component status
