Category: Nortel WLAN

Description: Manages system-level configuration, CPU load, memory utilization, and software version on Nortel NTWS controllers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NTWS-SYSTEM-MIB?

NTWS-SYSTEM-MIB is a Nortel Networks enterprise MIB for the NTWS wireless LAN switch/controller platform, covering system-level CPU and memory resource monitoring. It exposes CPU memory and flash memory used/total byte counts, along with CPU load reported both instantaneously and averaged over multiple windows -- last minute, last 5 minutes, last hour, last day, and last 3 days. This is a direct hardware/software-health MIB for capacity and performance monitoring: sustained high values in ntwsSysCpuLastDayLoad or ntwsSysCpuLast3DaysLoad indicate a controller under chronic CPU pressure, while ntwsSysFlashMemoryUsedBytes approaching ntwsSysFlashMemoryTotalBytes warns of impending storage exhaustion for configuration or firmware images. It is a self-contained Nortel product MIB (copyright Nortel Networks 2007) with no notable external MIB dependency called out in its description. It is deployed on Nortel NTWS wireless switches/controllers managing enterprise Wi-Fi access point fleets. Engineers can download the NTWS-SYSTEM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NTWS-SYSTEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Networks NTWS wireless LAN switches/controllers

Monitoring Examples

A wireless network administrator would poll ntwsSysCpuInstantLoad alongside ntwsSysCpuLastMinuteLoad and ntwsSysCpuLast5MinutesLoad to distinguish a brief CPU spike from a sustained overload on the controller. Checking ntwsSysCpuMemoryUsedBytes against ntwsSysCpuMemoryTotalBytes would reveal memory pressure that might explain slow AP failover or management responsiveness. If ntwsSysFlashMemoryUsedBytes is trending close to ntwsSysFlashMemoryTotalBytes, that flags a need to clean up old firmware images before the next software upgrade.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPU load (instant, 1-min, 5-min, hourly, daily, 3-day)
  • CPU memory used/total bytes
  • flash memory used/total bytes
