NTWS-ROOT-MIB is the enterprise root MIB for Nortel Networks' NTWS wireless LAN switch product family, establishing the top-level OID hierarchy under which product identifiers, temporary/experimental branches, module registrations, and trap definitions for the whole wireless-switch MIB suite are organized. It doesn't itself expose device telemetry but defines the organizational branches, such as ntwsProducts, ntwsRegistration, ntwsMibs, and ntwsTraps, that other NTWS modules attach to when reporting their own status, configuration, and fault data. Management tools that walk the NTWS-ROOT-MIB OID tree can enumerate every registered NTWS product and module branch to discover which vendor-specific tables are available on a given wireless switch, without prior knowledge of its exact model. Its indirect monitoring relevance is as the namespace anchor for the whole family's fault/trap infrastructure and product identification, which downstream MIBs use to report hardware/software status such as switch health, AP connectivity, and operational alarms. It has a direct organizational dependency on, and is depended on by, the rest of the NTWS MIB suite, including NTWS-BASIC-TC for shared types. It is used in Nortel/Avaya wireless LAN switch and access-point-controller deployments as the root namespace for the vendor's wireless management MIB family.

A management station uses ntwsProducts entries to identify which specific Nortel wireless switch model an agent represents before deciding which product-specific NTWS table to poll for AP status or radio statistics, and monitors the ntwsTraps subtree registration to recognize incoming fault notifications from the wireless switch family.
