Description: Manages NMS Communications Spanning Tree Protocol port states, bridge priority, and topology change events.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NMS-STP?
NMS-STP is a vendor-specific MIB from NMS Communications that models Spanning Tree Protocol (STP/RSTP/MSTP) hardening features on switch ports, including PortFast, BPDU Guard, BPDU Filter, UplinkFast, BackboneFast, Loop Guard, and Root Guard. It exposes both global enable/disable scalars (stpOptfPortFast, stpOptfBpduGuard, stpOptfBpduFilter, stpOptfUplinkFast, stpOptfBackboneFast, stpOptfLoopGuard) and a per-interface stpPortOptfTable, indexed by ifIndex, holding the same set of protections plus a combined stpPortOptfRootLoopGuard object. This kind of data is useful for monitoring because it reveals whether loop-prevention and fast-convergence protections are actually enabled on a per-port basis, which matters when diagnosing unexpected forwarding-state changes or topology instability. It depends on the standard ifIndex identifiers from RFC1213-MIB to map STP settings onto physical interfaces, and it is deployed on NMS Communications switches running Layer 2 spanning tree; administrators can download the NMS-STP MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-STP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- nms Co., Ltd. switch (STP/RSTP/MSTP hardening features, vendor unidentified)
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls stpPortOptfTable entries for a given ifIndex to confirm that stpPortOptfBpduGuard and stpPortOptfLoopFast are set to enabled(1) on access ports; if stpPortOptfPortFast shows enabled while stpPortOptfBpduGuard is disabled on the same port, that combination would flag a misconfigured edge port vulnerable to accidental loop formation.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-port PortFast state
- BPDU Guard/Filter status
- UplinkFast and BackboneFast enablement
- Loop Guard and Root Guard state
- combined root/loop guard mode per port
