What Is NBS-PRBS-MIB?

NBS-PRBS-MIB is a private enterprise MIB for controlling and monitoring Pseudo-Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) test pattern generation and checking, used to verify optical/digital signal quality and bit-error performance on NBS transmission equipment. It defines paired pattern and generator tables — one describing available PRBS test patterns by name/description, and another configuring which pattern is being generated on a given interface. This is fundamentally a diagnostic/test-mode MIB rather than a continuous health-monitoring one: it lets an operator verify a circuit's signal integrity by injecting a known bit pattern and checking for errors, which indirectly reveals the operational health of the transmission hardware (e.g. detecting bit errors caused by a failing optical transceiver or noisy line). It is a self-contained vendor MIB depending mainly on standard interface indexing (IF-MIB ifIndex) for associating PRBS generators/checkers with physical ports. It is typically used in field or lab testing of NBS optical/transmission gear during installation, turn-up, or troubleshooting of suspected line-quality issues, with technicians commonly loading the module into an NBS-PRBS-MIB MIB Browser view first to identify the exact generator and pattern objects available on the device.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-PRBS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NBS optical/digital transmission equipment

Monitoring Examples

A technician would configure nbsPrbsGenTable/nbsPrbsGenEntry, setting nbsPrbsGenIfIndex and nbsPrbsGenPatternIndex to select a PRBS pattern (looked up via nbsPrbsPatternTable/nbsPrbsPatternName/nbsPrbsPatternDesc) to transmit on a specific interface. They would then monitor the corresponding checker side for bit errors to confirm the physical link or optical path is clean before placing it into service. nbsPrbsGenPatternCaps indicates which pattern types a given interface's hardware supports, useful when selecting a test appropriate to the transmission technology in use.

What Can Be Monitored

  • available PRBS test patterns
  • active PRBS pattern per interface
  • PRBS generator capabilities per interface
  • bit error detection during pattern test
