Category: IP Routing, Multicast

Description: Defines multicast routing daemon configuration and group membership state objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MRD-MIB?

MRD-MIB defines managed objects for a Multicast Router Discovery (MRD) daemon/protocol implementation, a vendor-neutral IETF-style MIB used to manage multicast routing infrastructure. It exposes configuration and state for multicast route caching, pruning behavior, and per-interface multicast boundary/scoping definitions, including administrative enable/disable controls. Rather than physical hardware health, this MIB monitors the software/protocol status of the multicast routing process — whether MRD is enabled on an interface, its administrative state, cached route resolution timing, and scope-boundary configuration governing which multicast groups are permitted on a given link. It is closely related to other IETF multicast-routing MIBs (e.g., IGMP/PIM MIBs) since MRD interacts with the broader multicast routing subsystem on a device. It is typically deployed on routers or Layer-3 switches participating in multicast routing within an enterprise or service-provider network. Engineers can download the MRD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MRD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • multicast-capable router or Layer-3 switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mrdIntfBoundaryTable/mrdIntfBoundaryEntry (indexed by interface) to check mrdIntfAdminState and mrdIntfBoundMaskLength, confirming multicast scope boundaries are correctly applied per interface, and read mrdIntfScopedAddress to verify which multicast address ranges are filtered at that boundary. The scalars mrdEnableDisable and mrdPruneFlag show whether MRD and its pruning behavior are globally active, while mrdCachedRouteResTime indicates cached route hold time. An unexpectedly disabled mrdIntfAdminState on a core-facing interface would explain multicast traffic failing to reach downstream routers.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MRD administrative enable/disable state
  • per-interface multicast boundary scope
  • route cache resolution timeout
  • prune flag status
  • interface admin state for multicast
