Description: Defines managed objects for modeling and managing MPLS FEC-to-NHLFE (FTN) mappings at ingress Label Edge Routers.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB?

MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 3814) that models FEC-to-NHLFE (FTN) mappings on MPLS ingress Label Edge Routers — the rules that classify incoming IP traffic into MPLS label-switched paths. It exposes classification/configuration data such as address-range matching criteria (mplsFTNSourceAddrMin/Max, mplsFTNDestAddrMin, mplsFTNAddrType, mplsFTNMask) and row lifecycle status (mplsFTNRowStatus) in the mplsFTNTable, plus change-tracking (mplsFTNTableLastChanged) and notification objects (mplsFTNNotifications). While primarily a configuration/classification MIB rather than a hardware-sensor MIB, monitoring it reveals the control-plane software status of MPLS traffic classification — whether FTN entries are active and whether classification rules have recently changed — important for diagnosing misrouted or unclassified MPLS traffic. It depends on the broader MPLS/LSR MIB framework (e.g., an MPLS label-switching MIB) for the label-switched paths that FTN entries map traffic onto. It is deployed on MPLS-capable routers acting as Label Edge Routers in service-provider or enterprise MPLS networks. Engineers can download the MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 3814), not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to MPLS-capable routers / Label Edge Routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls mplsFTNTable (indexed by mplsFTNIndex) to review mplsFTNSourceAddrMin/Max and mplsFTNDestAddrMin ranges defining which IP traffic maps to a given label-switched path, checking mplsFTNRowStatus to confirm the mapping is active; a change in mplsFTNTableLastChanged combined with an inactive row status would flag a broken or recently disabled FTN classification rule causing traffic to fall back to unlabeled routing.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FEC-to-NHLFE mapping table entries
  • traffic classification address ranges
  • FTN row/entry status
  • table last-changed timestamp
  • FTN index allocation

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mplsFTNPerfMatchedPackets OID:

Select a device implementing MPLS-FTN-STD-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mplsFTNPerfMatchedPackets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of packets that matched the specified FTN entry if it is applied/mapped to the specified interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
