Category: Hardware Inventory

Description: Monitors Dell Chassis Management Controller blade enclosure and infrastructure status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MIB-Dell-CM?

This is a Dell private MIB for the Chassis Management Controller (CMC), the embedded management module in Dell PowerEdge blade server enclosures that oversees the shared chassis infrastructure such as power, cooling, and blade inventory rather than an individual server. It exposes device inventory data through a generic deviceTable listing each managed component in the chassis, servers, I/O modules, power supplies, fans, and the CMC itself, identified by vendor ID, device ID, sub-ID, and a display string, alongside chassis-level inventory metadata such as schema version, system ID, and locale. Its monitoring value is centered on hardware inventory and presence/identity status across the whole enclosure, confirming which blades and modules are physically present and correctly identified, foundational for detecting a missing, misseated, or unrecognized component in a blade chassis before drilling into that component's own health MIB for deeper status like temperature or power state. It complements Dell's broader OpenManage/iDRAC MIB family, which covers per-server hardware health in more depth. It is deployed specifically on Dell PowerEdge blade chassis managed by a CMC in data center environments, and administrators can download the MIB-Dell-CM file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MIB-Dell-CM. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell PowerEdge blade server chassis (M1000e/MX-series) with Chassis Management Controller

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll deviceTable/deviceEntry keyed by deviceIndex, reading deviceComponentID, deviceDisplayString, and deviceVendorID/deviceDeviceID/deviceSubID for each installed chassis component such as a blade, power supply, fan, or I/O module. A component whose expected deviceIndex is missing from the table, or whose deviceDisplayString doesn't match what's expected, would flag a removed, misseated, or unrecognized module in the enclosure. The inventorySystemID and inventorySchemaVersion scalars are used to confirm which chassis and inventory-model version the data corresponds to before comparing it against a baseline inventory.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis component inventory (blades, power supplies, fans, I/O modules)
  • component vendor/device/sub-device identification
  • component presence/absence in chassis slots
  • chassis system ID and inventory schema version
