Category: Hardware Inventory

Description: Monitors IBM Netfinity server services including health alerts, event log entries, and hardware component status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETFINITYSERVICES-MIB?

NETFINITYSERVICES-MIB is IBM's MIB for the Netfinity Services agent, the systems-management component of IBM's legacy Netfinity server line (the predecessor to IBM System x), used to expose hardware inventory and health-alert data from these servers. It exposes component identity/inventory fields (manufacturer, product, version, serial number) alongside a health-alert/event-log mechanism carrying alert text, severity, and alert type. It is heavily oriented toward hardware/software status monitoring: the alert objects surface entries from the server's internal health-event log - functioning much like IBM's Predictive Failure Analysis alerting - so a critical severity alert tied to a given component can flag a failing power supply, fan, or other hardware element before it causes an outage. It sits under IBM's enterprise OID branch (ibm, ibmProd, netFinity) and was typically used alongside other IBM systems-management MIBs of that era. It was deployed via IBM Director/Netfinity Manager agents on IBM Netfinity rack and tower servers in enterprise data centers. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NETFINITYSERVICES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETFINITYSERVICES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM Netfinity server
  • IBM System x predecessor rack/tower server

Monitoring Examples

tComponentid3/eComponentid3 identify a specific hardware component, while a1Manufacturer, a1Product, a1Version, and a1SerialNumber give its asset identity for inventory tracking. When a fault occurs, a2AlertText, a2Severity, and a2AlertType report the event; an administrator polling for a2Severity at the highest level tied to a component identified as a power supply or fan would recognize an imminent hardware failure requiring immediate replacement. Trending the alert log over time also helps distinguish a one-off transient event from a recurring hardware degradation pattern.

What Can Be Monitored

  • component manufacturer/product/version/serial number
  • health alert text
  • alert severity
  • alert type
  • hardware component health event log
