Category: Hardware Inventory

Description: Monitors and manages Compaq LAN Device Storage Manager disk subsystem status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LDSM-MIB?

LDSM-MIB is a Compaq/Intel SNMP module (under the "lanDesk"/"ldsm" enterprise namespace) for the LAN Device Storage Manager, an agent that reports on the storage subsystem status of managed computers/servers. It exposes objects describing the agent's own version, an overall device/computer status, and an event log recording storage-related occurrences with a computer name, event time, and event status. Its primary purpose is monitoring hardware status -- specifically disk/storage subsystem health via the status object and a timestamped event/error log per managed computer, letting admins detect storage faults soon after they occur. It sits under Intel's enterprise network-products/lanDesk branch, suggesting it depends on or complements broader Intel LANDesk management infrastructure rather than IETF standard storage MIBs. It was typically deployed in Compaq/Intel LANDesk-managed PC and server fleets of the late 1990s for centralized disk health and storage-event monitoring, and today the LDSM-MIB download is mainly of interest to those maintaining or archiving legacy LANDesk agent support.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LDSM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Compaq/Intel LANDesk-managed PC or server with LAN Device Storage Manager agent

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll the "status" object to get a quick overall storage-health indicator for a managed computer, and correlate it with entries described by "computerName", "eventTime", and "eventStatus" to see when and where a storage event (e.g. a disk fault) occurred. The "version" object confirms which LDSM agent build is running, useful when troubleshooting inconsistent reporting across a fleet. A change in "eventStatus" to a fault value alongside a recent "eventTime" would flag a newly-arisen disk problem needing attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • overall storage/device status
  • storage event log (time, status)
  • managed computer name
  • LDSM agent version
