Description: Provides management objects for Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) sessions and statistics on Juniper Networks devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is JUNIPER-BFD-MIB?
JUNIPER-BFD-MIB is a Juniper Networks enterprise MIB exposing Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) session data, a lightweight protocol used to rapidly detect faults in the forwarding path between adjacent routers. It provides per-session state, timing parameters, and statistics that indicate whether a BFD-monitored link/peer is currently considered up or down. Its core monitoring value is software/protocol-level fault detection: administrators use it to confirm neighbor liveness in near-real-time and to catch link or peer failures far faster than routing protocol hello timers would. It is explicitly built to complement routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, static routes) that rely on BFD for fast failure detection, so it is typically deployed alongside those protocol MIBs rather than standalone. Typical deployment context is core and edge routers/switches in service-provider and enterprise networks requiring sub-second failover. Engineers can download the JUNIPER-BFD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JUNIPER-BFD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Juniper router
- Juniper switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the BFD session table to check each session's current state (e.g., Up, Down, AdminDown) and detection-time parameters, catching a peer whose BFD session has flapped to Down, which would trigger a fast reroute event upstream. No sample objects were extracted for this module, so exact table/column names are unconfirmed, but the module description confirms its scope is limited to BFD session data. This MIB is primarily a link/neighbor-liveness monitor rather than a general hardware or performance MIB.
What Can Be Monitored
- BFD session state (up/down)
- BFD session timing parameters
- peer/neighbor liveness
- session flap events
