Category: Alarm and Event Management, Domain: Network Management, Vendor: IBM

Description: IBM MIB for fault management providing event logging, alarm tracking, and fault isolation objects for IBM network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IbmFaultMgmt-MIB?

IbmFaultMgmt-MIB is an IBM enterprise MIB used for hardware fault management and asset identification across IBM networking and systems hardware. It exposes objects describing physical product installation details, classification, machine type, model number, plant of manufacture, serial number, and microcode/EC level, as well as parallel software product install-specific information. Its emphasis is squarely on hardware inventory and version/fault tracking: administrators use it to confirm exact hardware and microcode revisions and to correlate faults to specific installed components rather than performance counters. It sits under the IBM enterprise OID branch and is generally used alongside other IBM hardware-management and event/alarm MIBs rather than IETF standards. Typical deployment is IBM networking hardware and systems requiring detailed field-service and fault-isolation reporting. Engineers can download the IbmFaultMgmt-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IbmFaultMgmt-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM networking/systems hardware
  • IBM field-replaceable units under fault management

Monitoring Examples

An admin would query hwProductInstallSpecificInfoTable/hwProductEntry for machineType, modelNum, seqNum, and microcodeECLevel to verify exactly which hardware revision and firmware EC level is installed, cross-referencing vendorIDhw and hardwareProdCommonName during a fault ticket. A mismatch between the expected microcodeECLevel and the value returned would flag a device running outdated microcode that needs a firmware update, and supporting-Data-Correl would help correlate the fault to the specific product instance.

What Can Be Monitored

  • machine type/model number
  • serial number
  • microcode/EC level
  • plant of manufacture
  • hardware product common name
  • software product install information
