What Is ITF-MIB?

ITF-MIB is Alcatel's customized re-issue of the standard IETF Interfaces MIB (IF-MIB/RFC1573) tailored for its iSAM/ASAM broadband access-node platforms, adding per-object 'ALCATEL NOTE' annotations that specify hardware support, in-service modification rules, ranges, and default values for each interface parameter. It exposes the classic ifTable/ifXTable pair covering every network interface on the device -- type, MTU, speed, physical address, administrative/operational status, and both 32-bit and 64-bit traffic counters -- alongside ifStackTable, which records how sub-layer interfaces (for example a DSL line stacked under an ATM or Ethernet layer) relate to one another. An ifTestTable lets a management station remotely trigger and retrieve results from a manager-locked interface self-test, and ifRcvAddressTable lists which unicast, broadcast, and multicast addresses each interface will accept. Because it is built on the vendor-neutral IANAifType registry, the module can describe any interface technology the access node exposes, from copper DSL ports to Ethernet uplinks, while the Alcatel-specific notes flag which objects are actually implemented or writable on a given card. This makes ITF-MIB SNMP monitoring a foundational part of tracking both the software configuration and real-time traffic/error status of every physical and logical interface on an Alcatel access-node deployment.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ITF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ifOperStatus against ifAdminStatus across the ifTable to spot interfaces that are administratively enabled but operationally down, such as a DSL port stuck down after a line fault, and cross-reference ifXTable's ifHCInOctets/ifHCOutOctets 64-bit counters to track high-volume broadband traffic without counter wraparound. Consulting ifStackTable would reveal which logical interface, such as a PPPoE or ATM layer, is stacked on top of a given physical DSL line, useful for tracing a fault up through the protocol stack. If a line card is suspected faulty, the operator could write to ifTestTable to invoke a self-test, then poll ifTestResult once ifTestStatus reports completion.
